Padi Box Sekinchan Review: A Unique Container Hotel in a Rice Field

Padi Box, Sekinchan – A Unique Container Hotel in Malaysia

For people who grew up near farms or rural areas, it might sound ridiculous that anyone would drive for hours and pay to sleep in a rice field.

But considering that I once traveled across the world to sleep in a barn in Switzerland, perhaps it’s not so surprising that I would spend a night in a rice field in my own country.

This particular rice field is in Sekinchan, one of the most popular day-trip destinations from Kuala Lumpur. It’s known for its wide paddy fields, seafood, fishing village, and rice products.

My friends and I did not just visit Sekinchan for the day. We spent the night there, inside a freight container in the middle of a paddy field.

Padi Box, Sekinchan

Padi Box is a cozy container-style homestay in Sekinchan, Selangor, located along Jalan Tali Air 4 and surrounded by paddy fields.

Instead of the usual hotel building, the rooms are built from repurposed freight containers painted in bright colors.

Probably the most eye-catching thing about Padi Box is just how colorful those containers are and how they contrast with the green of the surrounding rice fields.

Padi Box, Sekinchan

Padi Box is suitable for couples, small groups, families, and anyone looking for a more unusual place to stay in Sekinchan. It’s not a luxury resort, so don’t expect infinity pools, but it does have character and comfort.

Booking can be made on their website or on booking platforms such as Booking.com, Agoda and Klook.

Where is Padi Box?

Padi Box is located in Sekinchan, about 1.5 to 2 hours from Kuala Lumpur by car, depending on traffic and where in KL you are starting from.

The address is:

Padi Box Homes & Cafe
Lot 11126, Jalan Tali Air 4
45400 Sekinchan
Selangor, Malaysia

It’s slightly outside the main town area, but still close enough to reach Sekinchan’s restaurants, shops, and attractions.

How to get there

By car

Driving is the easiest way to get to Padi Box, especially if you plan to explore Sekinchan properly.

From Kuala Lumpur, take the LATAR Expressway towards Kuala Selangor and continue in the direction of Sekinchan. Before reaching Sekinchan town, look out for the turn into Jalan Tali Air 4. Padi Box is located about 500 meters from the main road.

By bus

We didn’t take the bus ourselves, but based on the information available online, you can take a bus from Pudu Sentral or Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS) in Kuala Lumpur towards Sekinchan, Kuala Selangor or Sabak Bernam.

🚌 Find bus tickets here

Do note that the nearest bus terminal in Sekinchan is still quite a distance from Padi Box. You can take a taxi, use e-hailing, arrange a pickup with your accommodation, or ask the driver if they can drop you near the junction to Jalan Tali Air 4.

If you’re travelling without a car, plan your food and transport a little more carefully. Sekinchan is not impossible without a car, but it’s definitely easier with one.

Rooms at Padi Box Sekinchan

Padi Box has several room types, including themed container rooms for couples, families, and groups.

💡 Tip: I recommend choosing a room with a window. If you’re coming all the way to sleep in a rice field, you might as well be able to see it from your bed. And check the planting season before your visit.

All rooms are air-conditioned and come with private bathrooms. Most have a TV and free WiFi.

Common areas and facilities

Padi Box also has shared spaces where guests can hang out. During our visit, there was a lounge area on the top floor with sofas, games, power points, and a few cozy corners.

The property also had bicycles for rent, which is one of the best ways to explore the surrounding paddy fields. Rental rates and availability may change, so check directly with Padi Box before your visit.

They also had a cafe inside a bus that sat on top a container. Unfortunately, it was not open during our stay, and it’s permanently closed now.

Our stay at Padi Box Sekinchan

Despite booking quite late, we managed to get a family room with a window.

Check-in was at 3 p.m., but we arrived about an hour early, hoping the room might already be ready. It was not, so we waited until around 2.30 p.m.

While waiting, we walked around and took photos. At the time, there did not seem to be many other guests, which made the place feel extra peaceful.

We initially thought a room on the upper floor would have the best view, but the family rooms were on the ground floor. This turned out fine because our window still faced the paddy fields.

The super king bed was placed on an upper deck above the sitting area, so if we sat there, we could still enjoy the view from a slightly higher angle.

Aside from the super king bed, the room also came with:

  • 2 double-decker beds (super single size)
  • a private shower room and toilet room
  • a wash basin
  • a 42″ LED TV in the sitting area
  • shoe racks near the entrance
  • towels and toiletries (shampoo & shower foam)
  • a few rolls of toilet paper
  • free bottles of water
  • a hair dryer
  • an iron
  • an electric kettle, and
  • mugs

There were no coffee or tea sachets in the room during our stay, and no spoons or stirrers either. Not a big deal, but if you’re the kind of person who needs a hot drink before speaking to other humans, bring your own supplies.

WiFi was available, but the signal was not strong during our visit, and I was unable to connect properly. This may have improved since then, but I wouldn’t recommend coming here with a plan to conduct important Zoom meetings or upload seventeen YouTube videos.

As expected, the room was compact. It’s a freight container after all, not a penthouse. The space between the beds and the wall was just wide enough for one person to walk through.

But I was actually impressed by how well they used the space. It had almost everything we needed and was decorated in a fun, tasteful way.

There were even a few photo-worthy corners inside the room itself, so you don’t have to wait until you are outside among the paddy fields to start taking pictures.

The beds were cozy, with comfy pillows and thick comforters. The super king bed (two super-single beds combined) was large enough to fit 3 people comfortably, though it may also depend on how much you like the other two people.

The lower sitting area had throw pillows and a giant teddy bear on a green grass-style carpet, matching the paddy-field theme outside.

Cycling around the paddy fields

The next morning, we rented bicycles to explore the area.

This is one of the nicest things to do in Sekinchan, especially in the morning or late afternoon when the sun is less aggressive. Cycling along the small roads between the paddy fields gives you a better feel of the area than simply driving past it.

Before handing over the bikes, one of the staff members checked that they were in working order.

Dining options at Padi Box Sekinchan

Breakfast was not included in our room rate during our stay, but it could be added for an extra fee if booked in advance. Check directly with Padi Box for the latest breakfast arrangement.

Padi Box may also offer BBQ packages, but these also need to be booked in advance.

If you have your own transport, you can easily drive into Sekinchan town for more food options. Sekinchan is especially famous for seafood. One local specialty to look out for is mentarang, also known as duck-mouth clams.

If you do not have a car, you can rent a bicycle and explore nearby restaurants or cafes, but keep in mind that distances may feel much longer under the midday sun.

Things to do near Padi Box

Padi Box is a good base for exploring Sekinchan. Some nearby things to do include:

  • cycling around the paddy fields
  • visiting the Sekinchan paddy processing gallery or rice-related attractions
  • eating seafood in Sekinchan town
  • visiting the fishing village
  • going to Pantai Redang Sekinchan
  • taking photos at the paddy fields
  • buying local rice products
  • trying mangoes or local snacks, depending on the season

Sekinchan works well as a day trip from Kuala Lumpur, but staying overnight gives you more time to enjoy the place without rushing from one stop to another.

Is Padi Box worth staying at?

Yes, if you are looking for a unique and memorable place to stay in Sekinchan.

Padi Box is quirky, colorful, and different from a standard hotel. It’s especially fun if you like boutique-style stays, unusual accommodations, and places with good photo spots.

That said, this is not the place to book if you want luxury-hotel spaciousness, polished resort service, or a long list of facilities. The rooms are compact, the experience is simple, and part of the charm comes from the fact that you are sleeping in a converted container surrounded by paddy fields.

For me, the best part was not just the container concept, but how clean, cosy, and well-maintained everything felt during our stay. It was not a case of style over substance. The place had personality, but it was still comfortable enough for a short getaway.

Final thoughts

Padi Box is one of the more unique places to stay in Malaysia, especially if you are looking for a quick escape from Kuala Lumpur.

It gives you the charm of rural Sekinchan without asking you to give up air-conditioning, private bathrooms, or a comfortable bed. You get paddy-field views, cycling routes, seafood nearby, and enough novelty to make the trip feel like more than just another weekend away.

It may not be everyone’s idea of a perfect holiday, but if the thought of sleeping inside a container in the middle of a rice field excites you, Padi Box is worth considering.
