ToggleKim Haus Loft - A Unique Stay in Georgetown, Penang
I have a weakness for unusual hotels — the kind of places that are a little offbeat and full of personality. Really, the weirder, the better.
While Kim Haus Loft in Georgetown, Penang is not exactly weird, it definitely falls into that “unusual and unforgettable” category. Best of all, there’s no cheesy gimmick here to lure tourists in — the charm is completely authentic. This place was once a real goldsmith’s workshop, not a replica or a made-up attraction, and much of that original spirit still lingers.
Location
Kim Haus Loft is situated on Campbell Street, one of the oldest streets in George Town. The location is perfect for exploring the cultural and historical landmarks of the city because everything is within walking distance.
You’re just a stone’s throw away from famous attractions such as the Penang Peranakan Mansion, Khoo Kongsi, and the quirky street art that Georgetown is famous for. The hotel is also conveniently located near local eateries, so your taste buds are in for a treat from the moment you step out.
History
The building that houses Kim Haus Loft has a story to tell. It was once a bustling goldsmith’s workshop and jewelry headquarters, but has now been transformed into a boutique hotel and restaurant that still respect its rich past.
The renovation preserved original features, like exposed brick walls and rustic wooden beams, making it feel both nostalgic and fresh. Like most of Penang, its decor is a delightful mix of cultural influences, from Chinese-inspired motifs to colonial-era furnishings.
The hotel also doubles as a goldsmith museum and art gallery. Everywhere you turn, you will see a collection of antiques, goldsmithing paraphernalia, and local artworks.
At the lobby, you’ll find booklets explaining the things that you see in the hotel. Apparently, Kim Haus has one of the biggest vault rooms in Penang that will only unlock itself at a designated time.
If the weather isn’t ideal for outdoor activities, you can easily spend a few hours marveling at the interesting exhibits here.
Room
Each room at Kim Haus Loft features industrial-chic decor, with simple but stylish furniture and thoughtful amenities that ensure comfort.
While they have double rooms and suites, there are also single rooms with shared bathrooms, perfect for solo or budget travelers. I stayed in a Deluxe Loft with a private bathroom.
What impressed me the most was how they optimized the space. In such a tiny area, they managed to fit in a double bed, bathroom, washbasin, and even a workspace with a desk and chair.
To top it off, the room rates are so wallet-friendly. The Deluxe Loft starts at RM85 per night, while the single rooms can go as low as RM66 per night.
Amenities & Services
The hotel features a unique outdoor gym with basic equipment (some were in disrepair when I visited). Although I’m not one for going to the gym when traveling, or ever at all, it’s good to know that it’s there in the unlikely event that I suddenly feel the urge to shed some kilos.
Long-term travelers would be happy to learn that there’s a self-service laundry room with washing machines and irons. Now, you no longer need to pay extra to get your clothes clean and pressed.
Aside from the onsite bar and restaurant, there are also plenty of other sitting areas for you to hang out with friends or meet new people.
Dining
One of the highlights of staying at Kim Haus Loft is the culinary experience. Right in front of the lobby, the hotel’s restaurant offers quite an extensive menu, featuring both local and international dishes.
Some room rates are inclusive of breakfast, which is also served here, with your choice of freshly brewed coffee or tea. And the breakfast is good too — not just some toast with butter and jam. What a great way to fuel yourself up before exploring the city!
As the day winds down, head to the bar on the second floor for a relaxing drink and some live music.

Final Thoughts
Kim Haus Loft is not just a place to stay; I would say it’s a destination in itself that is worth a visit the next time you’re in Georgetown, Penang. The rooms may be rather small, but they’re affordable, clean, and comfortable, which is all I need in an accommodation — no extra frills needed. But really, more than anything, its the historical charm and the uniqueness of staying in a former goldsmith workshop that made it a standout choice for me.
